Try making a collage with your child to make learning about your home state fun. Materials needed: magazines, newspapers, scissors, glue, construction paper or poster board.
Making a collage is a really fun way to learn basic facts about your state. You can give them certain information about your state that they must include in the collage or just let them decide. I give my children guidelines that must be followed. There collages have to have the state capital, state bird, flower, major economic features, major geographic features and famous people that have come from that state. After that , they can research further to add more layers and information to the collage. They learn interesting facts about our fifty states and have fun in the process.
Instructions for making your State Collage:
We usually did one state per week. This gives you ample time to study the interesting things that come up while you are researching. My kids have found this to be an enjoyable alternative to just memorizing the states and capitals.
