When I started having children twenty-four years ago, I resolved to raise them to be healthy and medication free. I was fortunate to get my hands on a copy of How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor by Robert S. Mendelsohn, MD. Because I was going against the norm, I had some trepidations. This book gave me the support I needed.
My husband and I chose to have our births with a midwife because I did not want to be medicated during childbirth or have other unnecessary interventions. That worked out very well for many reasons. One of them was it didnt require us to convince doctors and hospital personnel that we didnt want those extra things done to our babies that were typically done in a hospital birth setting.
After having read Dr. Mendelsohns book and doing a lot of other reading, we also decided not to immunize our children. I noticed that many of my friends children (who had been immunized) were frequently sick and had other emotional issues surrounding their immunizations. I was very happy with the outcome of this decision as I observed my children and compared them with other children as they were growing up in regards to their health. My children were infinitely healthier. On the few instances when my children would have a fever or some other sickness, I would turn to Dr. Mendelsohns book to remind myself that what I was doing was going to work and that I didnt need to run to the doctor as so many of my peers were doing. I didnt know any other babies or children at the time who werent often on antibiotics.
I learned that it IS possible to raise children without antibiotics and other medications. It is my hope to give new parents the courage to help your family travel down a path of wellness instead of sickness. There are even more things available today to help us raise healthy children. Have the courage!
