ADHD: Links To Causes And Cures

I read an interesting article recently written by Lindsay Turner of The Associated Press, that reported on how one-third of attention deficit cases among U.S. Children may be linked to tobacco smoke before birth or to lead exposure afterward. This particular study builds on previous research studies that links attention problems, including ADHD, with childhood lead exposure and tobacco smoke during pregnancy. Its uniqueness gives us one of the first estimates of how much these environmental factors matter.

This study's estimate is compatible with another study conducted by the National Academy of Sciences that claimed 3 percent of all developmental and neurological disorders in U.S. Children are caused by toxic chemicals and other environmental factors and 25 percent are due to a combination of environmental and genetic factors.

Although this is certainly a provocative study, most of us would not deny that toxic chemicals such as tobacco smoke or lead and many others are surely harmful to developing brains. Where then does that leave the roughly 75 percent that environmental and genetic factors aren't suspected causes?

There are a couple of other potential and just as important causes of ADHD and other neurological brain disorders than the factors mentioned in these studies.

Over one million children take prescription drugs for ADHD. It's not the only answer especially when there have been many studies done on more natural and cost effective options. There have been many studies done on the efficiency of omega-3 essential fatty acid, especially fish oil, on diet essentials for learning, behavioral, and emotional health. Fish oil is one of the best nutrients for a child with ADHD or an adult with a neurological disorder to take.

Our typical American standard diet ratio of to much omega-6 essential fatty acid to omega-3 is estimated at about 20:1, but many children have ratios that are even worse and can be as high as 50:1.

Water is another diet essential, and above and beyond anything else, should be considered a missing link as the main beverage in any child or adult's diet.. Care should be taken to limit fruit juices sodas, and pasteurized milk.

Advanced cultures many times suffer from diets that may be inadequate for children or adult's basic learning, behavioral, and emotional needs. These factors should be considered as links to the causes of attention problems as well as environmental factors. All links need to be considered in objective reporting, although this article did not promote chemical solutions to chemical toxicity causes.

Fish oil supplements along with adequate daily water intake will go a long way in improving attention deficit problems in children and neurological problems in adults. The basic rule to follow in adequate water intake is this: drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily.

Why resort to treating with prescription drugs (more potentially toxic unproven chemical answers) when natural alternatives have proven themselves in objective studies, one after the other? Kids with ADHD don't need chemical drugs that are as powerful as cocaine, when simple food changes are far more reliable, and attack the root cause instead of covering up the symptoms.
